It's no secret, this year's snowpack has been weak and unstable, skiers who enjoy skiing the backcountry really haven't been given any real opportunities to get out there. The snow has been so unstable that the skiing is just far too dangerous and the risk/reward just doesn't add up. So where is the silver lining in all this? Well that same dangerous snow pack that has blanketed our backcountry has also blanketed our resorts. You're probably asking yourself how on earth is he going to spin this into a positive situation. Well here it is. The snow safety teams at all the resorts are being super cautious, it is also taking them far longer to open new terrain than normal. But that translates into new untracked powder, for days and days after a storm has passed. For instance, the Canyons got Dream Catcher and Dreamscape lifts open yesterday. Now it only snowed 3" at the Canyons on Monday night but it snowed over 40" the week before. For those fortunate enough to ski there yesterday, it was a full on 40" inch powder day at those area lifts. The same sort of thing is happening all over the Wasatch. This morning, Snowbird got the Cirque Traverse open for the first time this season. Alta is also working on opening Catherine's Area. Park City Mountain Resortis still holding on to Jupiter lift but I can assure you they are working on getting it open as well. As I type this from my home in Park City I can hear PC Ski Patrol bombing away back in Jupiter. Well you get the point right. Keep checking your favorite local resorts' website and I'm sure you'll run into some good news about additional terrain opening.
In other news, another storm is on the way for Thursday and Thursday night. 6-12" in the Wasatch range south of I-80 and bit more to the north. Going to be another fun weekend of powder skiing in Utah! Here is what all this powder skiing looked like at Alta yesterday.
