By Harriet Wallis, the geezer gal:

The Brighton Senior Workshop is three days of fun and learning where mature skiers and riders tune up their skills with others of similar age: 50 and over. The instructors are also seniors. It’s the only resort to offer a seniors-only program.

“Seniors who are still skiing and riding into their 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s aren’t seniors in their brains,” said Carolyn Fushimi, training director of Brighton’s Sport School. “They want to polish skills and learn more about the sport they love. And they enjoy doing it with others their age. The Workshop welcomes never-ever beginners through seasoned powder hounds.

“On the first day, we ask the seniors to figure out their goals for the three sessions, and we group them by their ability and what they want to accomplish,” she said. We go from there to make it a comfortable learning environment.

It’s also social. Each Workshop group has the same instructor each week and it builds camaraderie. Seniors meet seniors they’ll enjoy skiing and riding with throughout the season.

Chairlift conversations range from what’s for dinner to analyzing the last run.
“I feel I can handle more steeps now. In the past, I would freak out a little bit,” said one.

“Those moves help me finish my turns better,” said another.

“Now I know how to get little shots through easy trees,” said another senior.

The Senior Workshop starts Jan. 11 and runs for three consecutive Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The price of $185 includes the 2-1/2 hour lessons and all-day lift tickets. The first morning kicks off with a Get to Know You brunch. Call 801- 532-4731 ext 209 for more information or you can register online at brightonresort.com.
